When to Water

Both drip irrigation and soaker hoses deliver water slowly and directly to the root zone — keeping foliage dry, reducing evaporation, and using far less water than overhead sprinklers. But they work differently and suit different situations.

Drip Irrigation

Drip systems use tubing with built-in emitters that release water at a precise, controlled rate — typically 0.5 to 2 gallons per hour. They're best for permanent plantings: established vegetables, fruit trees, and perennial beds where plant positions are fixed.

• Higher upfront cost, but very durable long-term

Soaker Hoses

Soaker hoses weep water along their entire length, making them ideal for row crops — beans, carrots, brassicas — where you want even moisture along a line rather than at specific points. They're cheaper, easier to move, and simpler to set up.

• Easy to reposition between seasons
• Best for rows rather than individual plants
• Flush regularly and store out of UV to prevent clogging

Walk past most home vegetable gardens and you'll see bare soil between plants — exposed to the sun, compacting with every rain, and losing moisture all day. A few inches of mulch changes everything.

What mulch actually does

A layer of organic mulch creates a buffer between the soil surface and the air. It shades the soil, dramatically slowing evaporation, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds, and gradually feeds soil microbes as it breaks down. Research consistently shows mulched beds require 25–50% less irrigation than bare soil.

How much is enough?

• Straw and shredded leaves: 3–4 inches
• Wood chips: 2–3 inches
• Compost: 1–2 inches (it's denser)

Straw is the classic choice for vegetable gardens — light, easy to apply, and it provides excellent habitat for ground beetles that hunt slugs and cutworms at night. Wood chips work better for pathways and perennials.

Tomato splitting happens when the fruit absorbs water faster than the skin can expand to accommodate it — almost always after a period of drought stress followed by a sudden large amount of water. The cause isn't the last watering; it's the inconsistency before it.

The two-part fix

• Water regularly and evenly — maintain consistent soil moisture so the plant never dries out significantly between waterings
• Mulch deeply — 3–4 inches of straw around tomato plants buffers the wet/dry cycles that cause splitting, especially after rain

Variety matters too

Cherry tomatoes split far more readily than larger varieties because their thin skins have less flexibility. If you grow cherries, harvest them slightly before fully ripe during wet periods — they'll ripen off the vine without splitting.

A lot of gardeners water a little every day, and their plants look fine — until there's a hot week, a missed day, or a dry spell. Then everything wilts fast. The reason is roots: they go where the water is.

Water deeply and infrequently — soaking the soil to 6–8 inches — and roots follow the moisture downward. Deep roots access moisture that surface layers never hold, making plants genuinely drought tolerant rather than dependent on your daily schedule.

How to water deeply

After watering, push a wooden skewer or screwdriver into the soil. It should slide in with low resistance to at least 6 inches. If it stops at 2–3 inches, you haven't watered deeply enough.

• Water slowly enough that soil can absorb it — fast watering just runs off
• Drip irrigation and soaker hoses naturally achieve deep penetration over time
• Wait until the top 2 inches of soil are dry before watering again

The single biggest factor in how much water your garden needs is the organic matter content of your soil. Soil rich in organic matter acts like a sponge. Depleted soil acts like concrete. Each percentage point increase in soil organic matter allows the soil to hold an additional 20,000 gallons of water per acre.

Compost is the foundation

A yearly top-dressing of 1–2 inches of finished compost worked into the top few inches of soil will measurably improve moisture retention within a single season — and the effects compound year over year.

• Apply in fall to integrate over winter, or in spring before planting
• Keep it in the top 4–6 inches — that's where roots and soil life concentrate
• Any compost works: homemade, municipal, or bagged

Most depleted garden soils have 1–2% organic matter. A healthy productive garden soil has 5% or more. Getting there takes 3–5 years of consistent compost additions — but the trajectory is visible within the first season.

A pot that looks fine in the morning can be bone dry and wilting by late afternoon on a hot day. Container plants are a different challenge from in-ground beds — a small, isolated volume of growing medium fully exposed to air on all sides.

How to slow down moisture loss

• Pot size: Bigger containers dry out more slowly — a 10-gallon pot holds moisture 2–3× longer than a 3-gallon one
• Material: Terracotta breathes through its walls and dries out faster than plastic or glazed ceramic
• Mulch on top: Even a thin layer of pea gravel or compost on the potting mix surface dramatically slows evaporation
• Self-watering containers: Built-in reservoirs wick water upward as needed — excellent for tomatoes and peppers

Most container vegetables need watering once a day in summer — twice on very hot or windy days. The test: lift the pot. A pot that feels noticeably lighter than when you last watered needs water.
